Travel experiences: The sento experience in Japan http://ow.ly/2j8QP

Notes to the link above:

If there’s a real reason why you have to go and visit Japan (considering all the expenses involved in getting into this trip), the sento tops the list. Visiting one and indulging myself in the safe confines of the sento remains to be one of my most memorable, meaningful experiences when I was in Japan. Actually, it’s the spa as most people would have it in other places. But in Japan, it’s a place to study and follow rituals related to the Japanese way of cleaning one’s self physically, and hopefully, spiritually. And there’s really nothing sexual in the experience as some may have experienced and shared with others who get afraid of anything suggestive of sex outside of their bedrooms (where they probably engage in troublesome & distracting activities other than sleeping, which may include eating while in bed, watching TV while in bed, rather than engaging themselves with their respective partners who maybe as tired as they are by the time they find themselves in bed at the end of the day! LOL—such a waste of life!).  Going to the sento allows you a space for yourself with others who you will not necessarily talk with or converse with as you’ll be in the business of doing the rigors of cleaning, uplifting your tired bodies (as well as your spirits).

I’d walk at least 10 blocks one time I was in Japan just to get into a sento, even in the midst of winter. I wasn’t exactly fluent in my knowledge of Nihongo but I would manage to get into one place where people would huddle around. Men have their own spaces, which is the same case with the women-folk, too. Children are allowed, too, generally – boys are with their fathers, girls are with their mothers. And I was surprised, one time, to see an old woman cleaning, organizing stuff in the men’s areas where the guys are all naked. Nothing shameful. Nothing distasteful. You’re supposed to be taking a brief shower or you may take your time cleaning up all parts of your body. And then you’ll have to take dips into the hot, as well as, the cold pools. The whole experience gets you very much in touch with your self in a manner different from what others may have in mind when they find themselves naked among others. It’s a very private experience, though communal when actually engaged on.

Go for it when you find yourself in Japan.
